History Vodice - Historical and Cultural Information about Vodice
Many historical findings confirm that people lived here since the Iron age. Here are found lefts of preRoman settlement and Liburnian necropolis from 4th century BC, which indicates that a very important trade route was passing trough this area. In the region of Vodice, a settlement Rakitnica is mentioned in 1251 as a part of a property of Subic family, and on a hill above the settlement was built a Castle which preserved 'till today and it's a real tourist attraction.

In 15th century were built observation towers and walls, which were used as a protection from the Turks. In 1552, the settlement Rakitnica refer to a Sibenik's bishopric and became more often target of Turkish attacks. The Turks captured the Castle, and inhabitants fled in Vodice. Turks have ruled from the Castle and their authority started to collapse when their army was defeated in Vienna. The beginning of Vodice is related with the beginning of the construction of Church of St. Cross in 1402.
